Attractions

Choosing an itinerary for exploring the Eastern Cape is at times an extremely difficult task. There is so much to see and do in this wonderful region. This province has it all. Below is a selection of just some of the activities that are on offer in the local area.

The owners of Africana House are happy to assist with arranging game drives, golf tee times and any other activities of interest for our guests.

Game Reserves

The surrounding area is rich in wildlife and there are several renowned and world class game reserves close by including:

  • Shamwari
  • Pumba
  • Lalibela
  • Kariega
  • Addo Elephant Park

Addo Elephant Park lies just 72kms from Port Elizabeth. The original park has recently been expanded to include the Woody Cape Nature Reserve that extends from the Sundays River mouth towards Alexandria and a marine reserve

The expansion has meant not only that the park contains five of South Africa's seven major vegetation zones (biomes) but also that it is probably the only park in the world to house the so-called "Big 7" (elephant, rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, leopard, whale and great white shark) in their natural habitat.

The park is home to more than 450 elephants, 400 Cape buffalo, over 48 endangered black rhino as well as a variety of antelope species. Lion and spotted hyena has also recently been re-introduced to the area.

Shamwari Private Game Reserve is home to Africa’s Big 5 (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard). It is situated on 25,000 hectares and is malaria free.

It has received the world’s leading conservation company and private game reserve award for 8 years running and is home to two Born Free Sanctuaries.

Pumba Private Game Reserve Pumba is widely recognised as one of the most beautiful game reserves in the area. It is set on 6,500 hectares and is home to a rare pride of white lions. The main lodge and cottages all overlook the Kariega River.

Golf

Apart from the Gary Player Design Signature course at Bushman Sands, there are many exceptional golf courses in the area, all of which are recognised as being in the Top 100 courses of South Africa. These include another Gary Player design at Fish River Sun, Port Alfred, Humewood (Port Elizabeth, one of the country’s genuine links courses) and the new Jack Nicklaus Signature course, St Francis Links.

Boat Cruises

The 200ha New Years Dam in the Bushman Sands Reserve provides the ideal platform to watch the mesmerising effect of an African sunset with the opportunity to view big game at the waters edge. A resident boat, Imvubu, can accommodate up to 50 people for private cruises. It is possible to see antelope, elephant and hippos whist enjoying a drink onboard.

Beaches

Another idyllic spot on the sunshine coast is Kenton-on-Sea. Sandwiched between the Kariega and Bushman’s rivers, Kenton offers plenty of activities to keep visitors entertained, from water skiing and canoeing, to surfing, fishing and golf.

A short drive from Kenton lies Cannon Rocks, one of the area’s best kept secrets. Rolling green farmlands meet with indigenous forest, which gives way to the world’s second fastest moving sand dunes.

Culture

Eastwards on the N2 lies the historic university town on Grahamstown, home of the National Arts Festival, held in July each year. It is the second largest arts festival in the word after Edinburgh.

There are a number of historical rock paintings and rock art sites in the Alicedale area, many of which are thousands of years old.
